South West Acute Hospital:
BEMS Supply and Commission

The South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen is the first hospital in Northern Ireland with entire single room en-suite accommodation for patients. There are 232 beds in total. The hospital delivers a wide range of services including Child Care, Critical Care Unit, Inpatients, Outpatients, A&E, Maternity, Surgical Theatres, Allied Health Professionals, Education, etc. The Education centre is a teaching hospital for Queens University and The Royal College of Surgeons. The hospital also comprises a Key Workers Accommodation on the grounds.

South West Acute Hospital has been designed to provide an environmentally-sensitive and sustainable solution. The facility incorporates sustainable features and technologies including, renewable energy, passive H&V features and site-sensitive design.

The Solution

The hospital consists of an extensive HVAC plant including 58 no. AHUs, 650 chilled beams, 380 radiant panels and 146 FCUs. There is an on-site Energy Centre which houses a 40 bar biomass boiler, an 8 bar biomass boiler and 2 no. 8 bar oil fired boilers.

Sirus was involved with the design and build for the Building and Energy Management System (BEMS) for the hospital and key workers accommodation.

The BEMS integrates all HVAC plant and third-party systems such as operating theatres, medical gas, UPS, fire systems, refrigerators, etc.

The energy management system ADP monitors all electrical, water and steam meters throughout the site and reports to the client for department billing purposes.

The Result

The BEMS project was successfully delivered on schedule by Sirus Engineers and Sirus has carried out BEMS maintenance providing planned preventative checks and 24-hour emergency call-out service for the system since the construction of the hospital in 2012.
